Socialism, an Attitude of Mind
As Mwalimu Nyerere observed, ‘Socialism, like democracy, is an attitude of mind. Hence, defined by neither racism nor ethnicity, I presume. Utopian or Intelligent, this calls for Universal Socialism yonder African Socialism. In a word, socialism is egalitarianism. It transcends race, region or religion.
Socialism in Uganda is enriched by UPC’s beginnings. Thence, a regional outfit with the likes of Kenya’s Felix Bukachi as a member. It’s marriage with Kabaka Yekka was for survival purposes. Gen. Sec. George Kakonge and the other Left-wingers lost touch with Obote’s leadership shortly thereafter.
With the likes of the maverick Dan Nabudere, fire-brand Semei Nyanzi and brilliant Bindadi Ssali in the picture, the Left was full of promises. Bitter-sweet that it’s in 2024 that re-evaluation is born. 60 years from the silencing of the anti-imperialism socialist struggle in Uganda. Lest we forget the ‘Communists of Katwe’.
Once again, let’s read African Pilot and Ntu publications. Let’s learn of the Political Economy, study socialism, both scientific and African, for a wider scope of knowledge. Names of British barristers Dennis Pritt and John Platts-Mills, parties such as CPGB and ASG must feature in your tete-a-tete. The Abbs Kibaso’s Bawejjere (Common Men) exploits, and those of
Party organisation to be with the masses albeit the dangers of necessary noise.
Let us be an alternative if we can’t be a complementary socio-economic solution to Africa’s problems. The education system that we can propose, alternative medicine that we can promote and economic approach that we can support, should be rooted in the creation of an egalitarian society.
Facilitations again dear brethren in the struggle. Continue the good works of your study circles by carrying out political organisation, education and ideology spread.
Closing remarks, as the opening remarks, we beg to pen off, with a quote from the Teacher and freedom preacher Nyerere.
‘Others try to reach the moon. We try to reach the village’. Thank you for choosing Bugiri township for this historic event.
Aluta continua!!!
